Key Information about the Pieces:

  1. Johann Sebastian Bach – Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243:
    • Bach’s setting of the Magnificat is a grand and joyful work. It features intricate choral writing, brilliant orchestration, and expressive solos. The piece is divided into several movements, each reflecting different sections of the biblical text. Expect soaring melodies, intricate counterpoint, and a triumphant finale.
  2. John Rutter – Magnificat:
    • Rutter’s Magnificat is a contemporary masterpiece. It combines traditional choral elements with modern harmonies and lush orchestration. The piece is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rhythmic vitality, and moments of serene reflection. Rutter’s setting captures the essence of Mary’s song of praise.
  3. Charles Villiers Stanford – Magnificat Op 164:
    • Written in 1918, Stanford’s Magnificat combines lush harmonies with a sense of reverence. The double chorus (SSAATTBB) weaves a tapestry of celestial sounds.

The Maidstone Singers was founded in 1998 by Jeffrey Vaughan Martin who fulfilled a long-held desire to create a small chamber choir. It is now a 26 strong a cappella choir of accomplished singers and has an established repertoire of over 300 pieces. These range from choral works dating from the 16th Century to the present day and modern close harmony arrangements of popular music and folk songs. The chamber choir is joined by invited singers for large scale works and this has enabled TMS to perform the more established choral masterpieces as well as a more intimate repertoire. Although based in Maidstone, TMS has performed in many locations, including appearances in the Brandenburg Concert Series in London. Touring is an important element of activities and TMS has flown the flag for Maidstone throughout Europe. The choir will be visiting Czechia in May 2024. Under the leadership of their Music Director, Kathryn Ridgeway, The Maidstone Singers continues down a path of embracing new musical challenges and working with partners both in England and overseas.
